Formerly known as the Little Black Dress Project, Blackout Trafficking is a project that takes place over the course of the month of March to raise awareness about human trafficking. This year, Alabaster Jar Project is a featured organization under the Blackout Trafficking umbrella, where you can sponsor us directly.
This project was originally designed as a way for busy citizens to make a difference in a great, yet easy, way. Participants are encouraged to wear the same black item every day for the entire month of March. When they are asked about this item, they are encouraged to use it as a teaching tool and share a fact about human trafficking with whomever they are with. They are also encouraged to document this on social media, sharing with others that they are wearing this item to take a stand for those who are affected by human trafficking.
We wear black for a number of reasons:
Our community uses this as a month-long meditation, mindfully reflecting on those who are still affected by human trafficking while focusing on how we can solve some major issues surrounding the lives and circumstances of trafficked individuals.
Our reflection can be seen as a fast. Committing to wearing this item may slightly restrict our daily lives but is minimal in comparison to the suffering of those who are trafficked.
These items may draw attention to ourselves. When others ask why we are wearing the same item all month, we have more opportunities to share about Blackout Trafficking and explain that it is meant to help heal the lives of those who are trafficked.
You can be a part of Blackout Trafficking in two ways:
One, you can wear one black item every day during March and use this opportunity to both raise awareness and to encourage others to sponsor you by donating towards AJP. You can join our team here.
Or, you can sponsor our team directly here. Donations can be as little as ten dollars!
If you do participate in Blackout Trafficking this month, please take the time to snap a picture of your black item and share it with us on Facebook. We love seeing our community get involved in our mission.
Thanks and good luck!
